First proposed in 1924, the World Conference met in Paris in 1928, when it elected an Executive Committee. It met in Frankfort in 1929. The purpose of the Conference was to convene representatives of all the world's religions to discuss ways and means for promoting world peace. As late as 1937 a conference was held in Geneva. Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The College opened in 1869 as an college and preparatory school, although the preparatory division was phased out in the 1880s.
